Top 5 Ways to Use Silver Bowls in Your Home

Silverware can be a great addition to ANY home, one piece that mustn’t get overlooked is the silver bowl! This versatile piece of silverware can be used in more ways that you can imagine. Here are our top 5 ways to use silver bowls in your home.

1. Fruit Bowl

The age-old classic, everybody likes the look of a fruit bowl, and silver bowls make for excellent fruit bowls. As well as serving a practical purpose, the beauty of the silver itself adds something extra to the presentation of fruit; its stark contrast to the bright colours of the fruit is not to be ignored.

Some of our bowls, such as this example, have designs that would look best on a fruit bowl. The best fruit bowl designs encompass either fruit on the bowl itself, or else leaves and floral designs. Something about the emphasis on nature is wonderfully applicable to a fruit bowl.

2. Sweets

I know what you’re thinking, this is the same idea as the fruit bowl just for sweets. Well, you’re right and you’re wrong. Yes, this is another idea of using a silver bowl to display food, but the similarities end there, my friend. While the fruit bowl is a proud public statement that you are indeed getting your essential vitamins and minerals, a sweets bowl is something saucy and secretive.

For such secretive purposes, a grand bowl is not on the cards. You need something every bit as sneaky and seductive as the sweets themselves. Something like this Georg Jensen bon bon dish would be perfect for keeping some sweets in for the next time the grandkids visit.

3. Sugar

While sugar bowls are usually an included addition to things like silver tea sets, there are occasions when you can find an individual sugar bowl that’s longing for a place of its own. The example shown here – an 1895 Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co piece – is a sugar bowl and sifter spoon set that are sure to look right at home on the kitchen counter or dining table.

Having a sugar bowl that’s separate from any tea or coffee service is always a sophisticated choice so that friends and family can help themselves to sugar without you having to get the entire tea set out.

4. Flowers

Keeping flowers in a bowl might sound a little out there for you, especially since a nice silver vase seems like the more common-sense option. However, if you want an antique that feels like a real antique, may I humbly suggest the rose bowl. This Regency style bowl has a removable grating that can be used to hold roses – or any other flower – in place.

The finished effect is stunning and very well-suited for utilising a silver bowl to dress up the house a little, perhaps for special occasions or for looking important on your next video call.

5. Nothing and Everything

Don’t worry, this idea isn’t as existential as it seems. Or perhaps it is? The simple fact is that antique silverware is beautiful in its many forms, and silver bowls are no different. If you enjoy the appearance and appreciate the master-craft design that’s gone into the piece, then you certainly don’t need a specific purpose to have it in your home.

This Chinese Export silver bowl is a personal favourite of mine, for example, and its twisting dragon designs are enough decoration as it is. Bowls such as this need no specific purpose, radiating beauty in their own right. As Chinese philosopher, Lao Tzu, once said: a bowl is most useful when it is empty.
