5 Ways to Wear a Watch Chain

Watch chains have been a staple in men’s wardrobes for decades. These metal accessories are a timeless addition to any accessory drawer, being as sophisticated as they are subtle. The original purpose of the watch chain was simple; to create a secure connection between a pocket watch and a waistcoat. When styling a watch chain, however, this is only the beginning. These are an incredibly versatile accessory that can be worn in numerous ways. Here’s just 5 ways to wear a watch chain.

1. Necklace

Although they are fairly simple in design, watch chains really make a statement when they are worn as necklaces. If you want to wear your watch chain every day but are lacking a pocket watch, then utilising it as a necklace is an ideal choice. This style is equally as suited to a casual t-shirt as it is a smart shirt- the subtle luxury of the piece elevates any look. The albert watch chain is especially perfect for this style. If ‘less is more’ is your stylistic ethos, then a simple watch chain peeking out from beneath your attire is the choice for you. To further this sophisticated style, consider opting for an antique watch chain – these are often of superior quality, and if this the accessory for you then why not treat yourself?

2. Bracelet

Watch chains also make excellent bracelets, particularly those that are shorter in length. This is ideal if you have inherited a chain but don’t want to wear it in the intended way, or find that it is too short to be worn as a necklace. Simply wrap the chain around your wrist, and hook the clasp as appropriate. For a more stacked, statement look, repeat this action twice. Since watch chains worn as bracelets are fairly visible, keep the rest of your jewellery minimal to avoid detracting from the piece. If you do decide to take a maximalist approach to your accessories, then ensure that you choose the same toned gold or silver for a cohesive look. The thickness of the chain you choose can also help to make this look more minimalist or maximalist. Opt for a slim chain for something more delicate, and leave the thick chains for when you’re making a statement.

3. Pocket Watch

This is of course the iconic way to wear a watch chain. Although these days wrist watches reign supreme, once upon a time pocket watches were the must have accessory. This traditional style is making a comeback, thanks to numerous stars and shows that celebrate this look. As such, there is no better time to try out a pocket watch with your watch chain. Simply thread the chain through the buttonhole of your waistcoat and pop the watch into your pocket. If you have the chain but would prefer to stick with your trusty wrist watch, then that’s no problem. Instead, attach a pendant or other ornament onto the end of your chain and repeat the process. Same style, but with added personality!

4. Trouser Chain

For a modern twist on a classic look, why not try wearing your watch chain as a trouser chain? We’re aware this image might conjure up images of early noughties fashion (hello baggy jeans!) but this can in fact be a very stylish look. To counteract the casual connotations of this style of chain, pair it with a pair of smart trousers. Add a pair of trainers, and you have the smart/ casual look down to perfection. Leather trousers are making a big comeback at the minute – another relic of the late ‘90s/early ‘00s – and the watch chain is the perfect companion to this look. This style is especially gender neutral, looking equally chic with masculine styles and feminine ones.

5. Accessories

Jewellery for men has been on the up and up in recent years. From rings, to brooches, to (of course) watch chains men have really embraced accessories for all occasions. That being said, we understand that for someone just starting out in their jewellery journey wearing a watch chain as a necklace or such like may feel slightly daunting! If this sounds like you then never fear- you can still pull off a watch chain. Rather than wear it on your person, try attaching it to your backpack or satchel. This is a wonderful way to add some personality to a look, and try out a trend, without diving in head first. Plus, this way of wearing a watch chain achieves maximum impact with minimum effort, which is always a win!

Ways to Wear a Watch Chain and Fob

One final topic to touch on is wearing a watch chain and fob. Not all watch chains have fobs, but ones that do manage to add even more style to this already incredibly chic accessory. In case you aren’t familiar with fobs, they are almost like keyrings for your watch chain. They are a short length of chain that attaches to the watch chain and features an ornamental attachment. This could be anything from a decorative coin, to a cameo portrait, to an anchor or other easily-recognised symbol.

The most traditional way to wear watch chains like this is to wear them with a three-piece suit or at the very least a waistcoat. Whether you have a single or double watch chain, the fob hangs straight down from the centre of the waistcoat where the chain is anchored through the buttonhole. It isn’t a necessity to wear fobs this way, however, as they also suit any of the styles we’ve suggested already. For example, when wearing the watch chain as a necklace, the fob can hang down like a pendant. Equally, wearing watch chains as bracelets lets the fob became like a charm. Ultimately, there is no wrong way to bring these accessories into your wardrobe.

Watch chains are incredibly versatile, and these are just a few of the ways that they can be styled. Whichever way you choose to wear your chain, remember that confidence is key. If you feel good, you’ll look good, no matter what accessories you’re wearing.
