Gothic Engagement Rings

When it comes to engagement rings, the traditional diamond solitaire isn’t the only option. History

When we think of the gothic aesthetic, you might be thinking of the 80s music-based subculture, the post-punk gothic rock of Britain. Or maybe you’re thinking of Goths who dress in all black, and find beauty in the darker things in life. Whatever you’re thinking we have a little history lesson for you!

The Gothic Period

The Gothic period, spanning from the 12th to the 16th centuries, was originally an era marked by ornate architecture, elaborate art, and intricate craftsmanship. Originating in France, Gothic style emphasized vertical lines, intricate details, and dramatic, almost otherworldly beauty. This period influenced various forms of art, including jewellery design, which featured bold and intricate elements, dark metals, and richly coloured gemstones. It’s not quite 80s rock or macabre but it is that same darker aesthetic!

Victorian Gothic Period

The Victorian Gothic period, spanning Queen Victoria’s reign from 1837 to 1901, deeply influenced fashion with its dark, dramatic aesthetic and intricate details. Victorian Gothic jewellery featured materials such as jet, onyx, and dark gemstones like garnet and amethyst, intricately crafted with motifs from Gothic architecture and literature. This jewellery conveyed sentiments of mourning, love, and spirituality, leaving a lasting influence on contemporary fashion.
