Brief History of Masonic Jewellery

Authentic masonic rings are a type of signet rings which often display membership or ‘brotherhood’ to the Freemasonry organisation. By wearing one of these pieces, for example a Freemason ring, it symbolizes an individual’s ongoing loyalty to the world’s earliest fraternal organisation.

Masonic jewellery dates back to the Middle Ages, a time where it was common to stamp documents in wax to authentic. The Medieval times were not just a time of jousting and jesters, they were also a time of Masonic rings, made up of precious metal, gems and enamels, these rings were worn exclusively by the elite, including Royality, officials and noblemen.

In the 18th century, Masonic jewellery came full circle as members of the Freemasonry began to wear rings which were symbolic of their loyalty to their brotherhood.

Fast forward to more recent times, signet rings are often seen worn by the young Freemasons of today.

It certainly isn’t rare for masonic rings to feature detailed engravings. Some masonic designs are representations of the tools used to ‘create and measure’ to remind Freemason members to ‘strive for perfection’. Some jewellery pieces often include the letter ‘G’, standing for God, ‘Grand Architect of the Universe’ and geometry, to symbolise the concept of immortality. Another symbol often used on these pieces is the ‘all-seeing eye’ symbolising the belief of a ‘divine being’ watching over us.

How to Master Freemason Etiquette

While there is not a handbook with a set of rules explaining masonic jewellery, here are 3 steps on how to master masonic etiquette and how to wear a masonic ring:

  1. Most members of the Freemasonry are seen wearing masonic rings on their pinky finger.
  2. The compass symbol should be worn facing toward you if you are a newer member.
  3. Both married and unmarried members may wear the masonic ring on their right-hand middle finger.
