What is Birthstone Jewellery?

Each month of the year is associated with at least one gemstone as its birthstone. This tradition is rooted in the Exodus book of the Bible. The Breastplate of Aaron featured a total of 12 gemstones commemorating the tribes of Israel. Although the stones were originally attributed to religious tribes, they are secular today. Since the 1700s, birthstones have been linked with specific months, first originating as a trend in Poland.

Birthstone jewellery is any type of jewellery that prominently features the birthstone of a single month. Jewellery pieces that feature multiple, coloured gemstones are not usually birthstone items. Equally, items where the coloured gemstone is a minimal feature are likely not birthstone jewellery either.

The exception to this would be if the jewellery itself was dainty. A small item with a small stone could still be birthstone jewellery. Usually, however, the birthstone itself is prominent. It can be set with a diamond surround. This enhances the colour and shine of the focal gemstone. Some birthstone jewellery pieces feature only a single stone, however. These are the most traditional and typical styles of birthstone jewellery.

Birthstone Rings

Birthstone rings are a specific category of birthstone jewellery. Similar to cluster rings, these pieces usually have a central stone that is the birthstone, surrounded by a ring of diamonds. These bold jewellery pieces are perfect gifts – not just for birthdays but also anniversaries and engagements. People who want something more unique from their engagement rings often consider their birthstone as a stand-in for the traditional diamond.

The September birthstone, vintage sapphire rings, have become increasingly popular engagement ring alternatives. Other colourful gemstone pieces like ruby rings, emerald rings, aquamarine rings, and amethyst rings are all also birthstone choices for engagement rings.

Some birthstone rings only feature the birthstone, with no diamond halo. These are ideal for showing off the individual beauty of each birthstone. They also provide a more cost-friendly way of giving birthstone jewellery to a loved one. The stones can be any size when set in the solitaire style, which is ideal for tailoring the ring to the individual.

Most months even have two birthstones, allowing for further customisation depending on the recipient’s taste. Birthstone jewellery gifts are the perfect combination of unique and sophisticated. Perfect for any age, occasion, or relationship, birthstone jewellery is the model gift.

Why Gift Birthstone Jewellery?

Choosing to gift birthstone jewellery allows you to make a more personal choice. Adapting a typical jewellery gift to a birthstone jewellery gift shows how well you know that special someone. This style of gift is also ideal for anyone to give.

Jewellery is often perceived as a purely romantic gift. Opting for a birthstone jewellery gift is not inherently romantic. Jewellery can become a platonic gift given by friends and family when birthstones are involved.

If you have considered buying jewellery as a gift for someone close to you, but you don’t want to be misconstrued, birthstone gifts are an excellent choice. That doesn’t mean that birthstone jewellery cannot be romantic, however. As is the case with any type of jewellery, it can be a perfectly romantic gift if you prefer.

Birthstone jewellery is also a useful guideline for those who are not confident in their gift-giving abilities. If you are ever unsure of what to get for someone for their birthday, a birthstone jewellery gift goes a long way.
