Recreating Hollywood Glamour with Art Deco Jewellery

Art Deco jewellery

An iconic and recognisable jewellery stye, Art Deco jewellery continues to be a popular choice. Here we are delving into Art Deco examples and how they can be incorporated into a modern-day wardrobe recapturing the Hollywood glamour they were known for.

What is Art Deco Jewellery?

One of the most distinctive eras for jewellery, the Art Deco period welcomed geometric designs, symmetrical lines and an overall bold appearance. The shapes created were architectural and treated like sculptures. This was a departure from the more delicate designs of the Victorian and Edwardian eras, and Art Deco jewellery complimented the fashions of the 1920s and 1930s, the jazz age and flapper lifestyle where short bobbed hairstyles, fringe dresses and sleek evening wear reigned supreme.

Many Art Deco jewellery items feature motifs reminiscent of the roaring twenties, with designs such as feathers and florals as well as the signatory geometric designs. Inspiration for pieces were found in various artistic movements: fauvism, cubism and an early wake of the Vienna Secessionists. Bright colours in the jewellery came from the inclusion of colourful gemstones such as sapphires, emeralds and rubies. Famous Art Deco jewellery designers include Suzanne Belperron, Cartier, Ostertag, Paul Brandt and Van Cleef & Arpels.

Art Deco Bracelets

If you’re looking for a statement piece then look no further than an Art Deco bracelet. Consisting of bold geometric shapes, an Art Deco bracelet or bangle will stand out on its own or stacked. Avoid paring with anything that will distract from the statement piece, if you really want the Art Deco piece to do the talking, try pairing with a simple pair of studs, perhaps choose a simple gemstone ring that matches the gemstone used in your bracelet to enhance it not clash with it.  If your Art Deco bracelet is smaller, then pair with a bold necklace or earrings for a cohesive and glamourous look. Try bold make up such as a dark red lip or smoky eye to provide even more retro glamour with your Art Deco bracelet.

Art Deco Pendants and Necklaces

Bold Art Deco pendants are eye catching and an easy way to make them stand out further is to pair them with a simple outfit. Avoid loud patterns or heavily embroidered pieces that may clash with your pendant. Try pairing with neutral colours whether that be an evening dress or a casual blouse. To emphasise the Hollywood glamour of it all, try wearing a velvet or satin outfit. You can further compliment the symmetry of the Art Deco piece by wearing clothing with sharp lines like a tailored blouse or fitted blazer. Shorter necklaces pair well with off the shoulder, strapless or sweetheart necklines and can smooth out the angles on heart shaped faces. Whilst longer necklaces work with turtle necks or open necklines like a scoop V-neck and can complement the torso of taller people.

Art Deco Earrings

An iconic element of this era was the shorter hairstyles, if you can wear your hair in an updo or style it similar to a flapper girl, you can further highlight the Art Deco essence. Slick back pony tails or buns can create a slick backdrop for statement Art Deco earrings. Try matching the colour of your outfit to the tone of the gemstone included, for example if your earrings feature emeralds, try incorporating green into your outfit. Keep your look balanced, if you have large chandelier earrings or drop earrings, keep your other accessories simpler, like a delicate chain bracelet or dainty pendant.

Art Deco Brooches

With intricate metal work and precious gemstones, add a touch of elegance to a coat, shawl or a blazer with an Art Deco brooch. You can even secure a scarf in place by pinning a brooch on it whilst providing some extra sophistication. Try pinning a brooch to a pocket square or lapel, giving a flair to a suit or tailored jacket. If you’re wearing a wide brimmed hat or a fedora you can create some unexpected sparkle by pinning the brooch to the side of it; it works especially well against the neutral tones.

Art Deco Rings

Often Art Deco rings provide a pop of colour, so why not choose a bold gemstone ring to brighten your outfit. You can match to your outfits overall colour scheme like matching sapphire rings with a blue toned outfit. Opting for a monochromatic look can allow the ring to appear even more striking. Whether you are going for a sleek evening look or a causal everyday look the Art Deco ring can stand out, just don’t overwhelm the ring and keep other jewellery minimal, such as a fine chain bracelet. With attention drawn to your hand, consider your nails, as keeping them sleek and polished can further highlight the rings beauty.
